The Size of Your Fist

Still having some trouble with the internet. Couldn’t write in my blog yesterday, but today it seems fine. Let’s hope they have all the bugs worked out. Went to see the Texans play the Colts, and it looked like we were in for a big win – then all of the sudden the wheels came off in the last four minutes of the game and little piecie parts went flying all over the place – we lost! It was amazing – we had a 17 point lead for ages, and then bang! Rosenfels (Shaub was ill) found himself carrying the ball, got tackled, went flying through the air, dropped the ball which was then picked up by the Colts and run in for a touchdown – and then we stopped playing and lost the game! Wow! Reminds me of the old Houston Oilers.

Well, on to our facts about our body:

If it were removed from the body, the small intestine would stretch to a length of 22 feet.

O.K. now we are getting into the area where, if we are predisposed to be overweight, we need to be more aware of than any other part of our body – our digestive system, of which the small intestine is a part of. The intestine is the portion of the digestive tract between the stomach and the anus. It is divided into two major sections: small intestine and large intestine.

The small intestine receives from the stomach the food we eat. It is coiled in the center of the abdomen and divided into three sections and is responsible for secreting hormones which stimulate the pancreas to produce digestive enzymes

The small and large intestines perform different functions. The small intestine is where the most extensive part of digestion occurs. Most food products are absorbed in the small intestine, while the large intestine absorbs water and excretes solid waste material. If you really want to know how the digestive system works, you can find a great article on the internet:

Let’s go back to the stomach for a second. The stomach is where we first start getting into trouble when we begin overeating. The amount of food that the stomach can hold varies. Normally, an adult’s stomach will have a minimum capacity to hold a portion the size of a fist, however, that can be stretched to abnormal and then to gigantic sizes, depending on how you abuse it. It is very elastic in the beginning, but it is easy to stretch the stomach so far out of proportion and over an extended period of time that will break down the elasticity and that is when you find your stomach reaching your knees and if you do reduce your weight, it does not snap back into shape. in your stomach.

Because your stomach can be the determining factor in overeating, this is one of the reasons many nutritionists and dietitians suggest that a person eat four or five meals a day instead of three large ones – it helps balance the intake of the food so the body can more easily digest and distribute the nutrients and eliminate the waste and it keeps the stomach small enough that if you are listening to your body you are aware that your stomach is satisfied and you can quit eating, knowing that you have had enough at the time. So, the next time you sit down to a meal, give your small intestine a break – don’t make it work so hard, and give yourself a break – listen to your body and eat only until it tells you that it is satisfied
