Do you occasionally have sleepless nights? I don’t mean suffer from insomnia but just one of those nights when you can’t get to sleep for whatever reason, or for no reason at all. Last night was one of those nights for me. I really don’t have any concerns or unfinished business that needs to be taken care or, but everything that I either need to do soon or want to do came to mind and I just couldn’t shut it off. So, if this makes less sense than some of my ramblings, you know the reason why.
One of the thoughts that crossed my mind as I lay there tossing and turning was that for those of us that find ourselves overweight is because we condition ourselves for excess weight just like we condition ourselves to get up each morning, walk, talk, act, feel, see, react – all the things we seem to do automatically – breathe, make our blood flow through our veins, pump our heart, etc. None of these things are given much if any thought throughout our day – these acts are all done through our sub-conscious – and I think you will agree with me that if we had to think about accomplishing any one of these things with our conscious brain, we would never get anything done.
Well, our eating habits and our thinking habits when it comes to our bodies and food is one of these sub-conscious habits. It is a habit because we can do it without giving it a thought – that is until it seems to get out of control, and then we begin to consciously think about it. Then we decided to do something about it. What do we do? We find another eating program that will reduce our weight back down to where we feel better about ourselves, and to this act we give a lot of conscious thought. We count calories, or count points, or watch how many carbs we eat, or how much fat we consume, how much water we drink, how much exercise we do – all consciously considered every day we are on our eating program. The one conscious act that seems to be missing is the one where we make a true conscious effort to make these new eating habits our sub-conscious habit so we won’t ever have to think about it again. I’m not saying that a true conscious effort isn’t being made while in the act of reducing your weight – but the conscious act of realizing that once your reach your desired weight, you must continue to visualize and feel like this thin, attractive, completely in control person that you have willed yourself to be.
Why is it easier to forget within such a short period of time how good and wonderful this desired weight feels and give in to slowly slipping back into your old habits of eating and thinking about yourself and food? Could it be because you don’t really think about yourself as this thin, attractive, completely in control person? Before you go on your next eating program, stop and really analyze what and how you feel about yourself – be honest. Do you really, I mean really, really see yourself as that new person for the rest of your life, or do you just look forward to the time when you reach your goal weight and then hope you can maintain that weight, not really expecting to do so? I’ve been there. I know what I’m talking about. Changing your attitude and your thoughts to a permanent condition is not impossible, not difficult – you just have to really, really want to do so and then search for a fool proof method to reach this point.
